A delegation from Newport News’s Sister City, Greifswald, Germany, enjoyed learning about and touring our “open-air art gallery.” We heard what we’ve heard from communities across the U.S. and Europe: The way we “do” public art in Newport News is remarkable. While the City is an enthusiastic partner, the Foundation is a volunteer-run non-profit, we install a lot of art, and most of it is paid for by donations from local residents and businesses. In other words, this community enjoys great art because it makes it happen. In honor of our visitors, here’s our favorite Germany connection: ‘Handshake’ by Gunther Stilling.
