Personal Portrait of Helaine Blumenfeld
Hignell Gallery’s new exhibition, Hard Beauty, presents a personal portrait of the career of sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld OBE. Blumenfeld is best known to Newport News as the sculptor of “Spirit of Life” on Riverside Hospital grounds. The exhibition offers new insight into Blumenfeld’s impact on contemporary sculpture at a vital point in her career. The exhibition features new pieces in bronze, marble and terracotta as well as rarely seen drawings and works on paper, showcasing how she continues to take risks in her work and career. Highlights include “Two Sides of a Woman” which, made from white marble, is seemingly weightless, and “Crescendo,” which appears to suggest the wings of a bird or the petals of a flower in bloom.
