Inspiration
Like all artists, the 20 young sculptors whose work was on display at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center over the weekend had stories to tell: about acceptance and belonging, peace and love and community. The Boys & Girls Club members got started by taking a field trip to some of the city’s fantastic public art, teasing out what the artists were saying, finding themes that are meaningful to them, then translating them into three-dimensions … and explaining them to visitors at the artists’ reception on Monday. The work was remarkable … we’re looking forward to seeing more! The project is a partnership of Art, Design & Education; the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula; the city of Newport News; the National Council of Jewish Women Hampton Roads Section; and the Newport News Public Art Foundation.
